DownNeck guitarist Chris DiNardo Reviews KISSOLOGY 3

Ok first off let me start off by saying I'm a die hard Kiss fan in every sense of the word. I just wanted that to be known so you know where I'm coming from with this review. Overall I feel like I'm apart of a bad divorce. On one hand I feel it's awesome that Paul and Gene are brutally honest in the commentary. On the other hand if I was the kid in a divorce I wouldn't want my Mom to tell me how much of a scum bag my Dad is. Doesn't seem like the stand up thing to do. It's Paul and Gene's version of what happened. Not Kiss' version.  But this could all be part of the plan. Don't be surprised if this all pre game hype to a reality show with the four members getting through a 27 day tour and recording a new album. Hopefully this will be on HBO cause I do enjoy cursing and real life, not to mention I need something to replace the void The Sopranos left in my Sunday nights. With all that being said let's move on to the review of Kissology 3

Disc -1

The Revenge/Alive 3 show was at first glance the least desired piece of Kissology 3 for me. I love the Makeup and don't really care to much of non make up kiss. The show blew my fucking face off. I tried to figure out why this hit me so hard, made me light up a smoke, get closer to the TV, turn up the sound and roll my sleeves up. It was the attack of Eric Singer. Double Bass fury. It added a punch and a twist to Kiss songs that might not sound like old Kiss, but sometimes it's nice to have someone else drive the car and that person likes to drive fast. It's like the start of a 2 hour car ride. You get in and right from the start the driver floors it. You know what kind of a ride you are in for and you know you are gonna get there fast. Killer show.

The Unplugged sessions are great. The commentary however is bitch fest. It made me take a break from watching the rest of the DVD. A great moment for Kiss fans was pissed on by Paul and Gene. They were honest.. about their side of the story. I don't care if a lawyer was doing a job for his client. Gene and Paul babble on about The apprehension of entering a business deal with Ace and Peter. The only reason I brought it up was because Gene and Paul talk about it in detail in the commentary. So it's out there for everyone and a re occurring theme of brutal honesty flowing through the commentary.

Beth sounds awesome on the unplugged. At first note you are blown away by the sound of the four original members of Kiss. Amazing arrangement of cool ass chords, great singing and the soul of a great band. As a Kiss fan when this happen it was bliss. This Unplugged part of this DVD is a can't miss. Sounds great. Every Kiss song sounds amazing Unplugged. Ok I admit it, I went and made tea during Every Time I look at you. :P

Disc 2

Tiger's Stadium is nice to have. I wish it wasn't the DV tape of the screen from the night of the show but I'll take what I can get. I wish I was there when it happened. It sounds great and I will cherish this always. I do have to speak about the glaring fuck up of all Kiss fuck ups in Deuce. I am beyond ecstatic they left this in. Kiss can be an edit and cover up band on occasion. Here they clearly weren't and it's terrific. Keep in mind we don't know what happened. Monitors could have went down, a cue could have been missed, or given the amount of adrenaline that was pumping through them would probably be too much for most humans to function with. All in all a great show. I thought Ace sounded and played awesome. Paul sung his balls off. Cool stuff. The Commentary is more of the same from Gene and Paul. If I was sitting there with them I would say "Dudes you are killing the dvd for me, please stop. Say something cool, give me something happy, cause I wanna be happy right now."... Words like Torture make ya almost want to turn off the DVD. Christine Sixteen and Rock Bottom are enough to make ya smile and keep watching. Those tunes sounded awesome.

The VMA awards to me is the hands down champ of Kissology 3. This performance was amazing. Every song sounds great and you wish they played longer. It was up tempo and intense. Peter was awesome and on point. New York Groove sounded magnificent and really was the perfect song for a perfect night in NYC. Kiss is a NYC band and will always be a NYC band. I don't care where in the world they live now. Every song in this performance had attitude and punch. I loved it :)

Dodger Stadium sounded great too. It sounded far better then when they played it on VH1. The stage looks great. Nice long shots of the stage from way back as well as the shots of the crowd give you a real sense of the size and feel of the entire show. Within was a show highlight. I love this tune. Within sounded great and Ace's solo in it ripped. Great show.

In the Commentary Paul talks about the song selection process for the Psycho Circus album. No one is knocking the "lets pick the best song no matter who writes it" way of making an album but what about taste? Raise your Glasses? Dreaming?...Um...These were the best of the best?..On a quick side note, I have to say I love hearing Paul say Album.Everytime he says it I wanna crack open new vinyl and smell it. Thank god for 4 great Kiss tunes on that album and that 3 of those songs sound amazing on Disc 2 and disc 3 live from Dodger Stadium. The Dodger Stadium show gets better and better everytime I watch it. It looks and sounds great. The song She was my favorite of this show.

Disc 3

The Movie opening show looked and sounded cool. Once you notice the buildings and the moving cars behind them you get a feel of the evening and the show. Nice performance, I enjoyed it.

The NJ show from The meadowlands was really good. As a matter of fact I'm going to hand out an award for hottest chicks ever in a Kiss concert video. The 2 girls in the front ya see during Duece get my award. It took a long time to knock off the 80's lady in Animalize Live Uncensored with a sparkle in her eye but these girls did it with a bang. Jersey had a party that night. The crowd was into it. Great show.

The commentary at this point is just too much. I'm over the whole Ace and Peter are drug addict nut jobs with no work ethic stuff. I'm not saying Ace and Peter were boy scouts but perhaps Gene and Paul needed to loosen up a bit. Maybe somewhere in the middle could have made this fun for them. I'm sorry things were so shitty for them. It was a ball for the fans. I think Gene and Paul were afraid of chaos. Some chaos is cool if you maintain clarity in the face of it. In other words maybe Peter and Ace should have held on to the railing a little more and Paul and Gene needed to let go of the railing.

Disc 4

Who ever came up with the idea of putting a one camera video of Kiss in a bar is a genius.
It's so awesome to see the band so raw, so hungry, and so young. I loved this little show. It was a perfect way to end the Kissology series. Ahhh but wait.. is it the end????

The Credits

The End with Peter Criss destroying his drums after the Credits is one of the best things I ever seen. Yes Pete. That was great :)

Easter Eggs

The Carnival of Souls sessions were really cool. I thought that album was terrific. Seeing this little clip on how some of it was made me like this album even more.

The VMA rehearsals i was like..Um ok...cool

2000 man from the milenium show was killer. Great choice in song and the performance was awesome.

You can't go wrong with any Kissology in the series. They all are amazingly afordable and fun as hell to go and buy. Yes Kiss makes it fun for it's fans to buy stuff. Bonus Discs of shows can be found only at certain stores. Kissology 3 is the end of giant party. Kissology 3 was totally fun. I'm totally thankful for what they created and given to us over the years. To me Ace, Paul, Peter, and Gene are the greatest american band of all time. Kissology 3 was really good.
